Srinagar, June 20: A joint strategy to achieve a target of 225 metric tonnes of raw silk production in Jammu and Kashmir by 2030-31 was formulated during a review and monitoring meeting on sericulture development held at the Central Silk Board’s Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSB–CSR&TI), Pampore, on Friday.
The meeting was chaired by Director, Sericulture Development Department, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat and attended by Director, CSB–CSR&TI, Dr N. Sakthivel, along with scientists and officials of the Sericulture Department.
Discussions focused on measures required to meet the raw silk production target, including preparedness for upcoming silkworm rearing seasons, disease monitoring, crop surveillance and strengthening training and extension programmes during 2026-27.
The participants emphasized the need for synchronized brushing schedules, expansion of sericulture activities to new areas and adoption of region-specific scientific practices to improve productivity.
The meeting highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between research institutions and the Sericulture Department, use of modern technologies and effective stakeholder collaboration to enhance bivoltine silk production and improve rural livelihoods.
Officials reiterated their commitment to working jointly for the sustainable growth and long-term development of the sericulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
