India Retains EU Market Access for $1.59 Billion Fisheries Exports Under New Rules

New Delhi, June 8: India has secured continued access to the European Union market for exports of aquaculture products, honey, eggs and animal casings beyond September 2026 after being included in the list of countries authorised under the EU’s revised regulatory framework.

The development assumes significance for India’s fisheries sector, with exports of fish and fishery products to the European Union currently valued at around USD 1.59 billion annually.

The European Union has amended Regulation (EU) 2021/405 through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1189, introducing additional requirements for countries exporting certain animal-origin products. The changes have been made in response to growing concerns over Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and will come into force from September 2026.

India’s inclusion in the updated list of authorised countries ensures that exports of aquaculture products, eggs, honey and animal casings to the EU can continue without disruption under the new regulatory regime.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the achievement follows sustained engagement by the Department of Commerce with the European Commission on regulatory and market access issues. The ministry said the effort was supported by the Export Inspection Council (EIC), which strengthened India’s official control system through enhanced inspection, testing and certification mechanisms aligned with EU standards.

Officials said the Department of Commerce and the EIC, in collaboration with stakeholders including the Marine Products Export Development Authority, will continue to work with EU-approved establishments and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with the new requirements and maintain high standards of quality and food safety.

The government said the decision is expected to provide certainty to Indian exporters, support export growth and create fresh opportunities across the fisheries, honey, egg and animal products sectors.

The Centre reiterated its commitment to strengthening export competitiveness, enhancing institutional capacities and deepening trade and economic cooperation with key partners, including the European Union.
