India’s doctor-population ratio reaches 1:778 as MBBS seats rise to 1.29 lakh

New Delhi, July 24: The number of MBBS seats in India has increased to 1,28,976 in the 2025–26 academic year from 1,09,115 in 2023–24, while postgraduate medical seats have expanded to 86,360 during the same period, according to the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The figures were shared by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

According to the minister, postgraduate (PG) medical seats have witnessed a sharp increase from 31,185 in the 2023–24 academic year to 86,360 in 2025–26, reflecting a substantial expansion in higher medical education capacity across the country.

The government also informed Parliament that India’s doctor-population ratio has improved to 1:778, based on the current number of registered practitioners in the allopathic and AYUSH systems of medicine.

Data from the Indian Medical Register (IMR) shows that the country has 15,35,155 registered allopathic doctors. In addition, there are 7,51,768 registered practitioners in the AYUSH systems of medicine.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that, assuming 80 per cent availability of registered practitioners in both systems, the combined doctor-population ratio is estimated at one doctor for every 778 persons.

The latest figures indicate continued growth in India’s medical education infrastructure and healthcare workforce as the Centre seeks to expand access to medical training and strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide.
