As NEET-UG 2026 is cancelled over alleged paper leak, anxiety grips parents, students

New Delhi, May 12: Widespread anxiety and uncertainty gripped students and parents across the country after the cancellation of NEET UG 2026 following allegations that a leaked “guess paper” had compromised the integrity of the examination.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate), regarded as India’s largest medical entrance examination, was cancelled after concerns were raised by central agencies regarding possible malpractice and unauthorised circulation of exam-related material before the test.

Amid mounting controversy, the Government of India ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate the alleged leak and determine whether organised irregularities or criminal networks were involved.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the examination, announced that a fresh examination would be held for all candidates. The agency clarified that no new registration process or additional examination fee would be required and that previously submitted application data would be reused for the re-examination.

Officials also stated that candidates who had already paid examination fees would not be charged again and assured students that revised dates and guidelines would be announced shortly.

The cancellation triggered anger and anxiety among lakhs of aspirants, many of whom had spent months preparing for the highly competitive examination. Students and parents in several cities demanded accountability and greater transparency from authorities, questioning how such a large-scale breach could occur despite existing security measures.

Several student groups and education activists called for stronger safeguards in national-level competitive examinations, arguing that repeated controversies were undermining public confidence in the system.

Education experts said the incident has once again highlighted persistent concerns over exam security, digital monitoring and the vulnerability of high-stakes recruitment and entrance tests in the country.

The government has assured strict action against those found responsible and said steps would be taken to strengthen the integrity and security of future examinations.
