Srinagar, March 3: Srinagar Police on Tuesday said it has taken serious note of what it described as the deliberate circulation of false, fabricated and misleading information by certain news channels, media outlets and individuals across electronic and social media platforms.
In a statement issued here, police said that some elements were allegedly attempting to spread distorted narratives and unverified content with the intent to create unrest and disturb public order. Such misinformation campaigns, the statement said, pose a threat to peace and security.
Acting on the matter, police have registered First Information Report (FIR) No. 01/2026 at the Cyber Police Station under relevant legal provisions. Officials said several social media profiles have been identified in connection with the case and the concerned individuals have been summoned to the cyber cell for questioning.
Police said the investigation is underway and strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in spreading fake or inflammatory content.
Issuing an advisory, Srinagar Police urged citizens and media organisations to exercise caution and verify information through official and credible sources before sharing it online. It warned that circulating unverified or misleading content that may disturb communal harmony or public order would attract legal consequences.
Reiterating its commitment to maintaining law and order, the police said it would not allow any attempt to destabilise peace in the region. (With inputs from GNS)
