Out of 958 candidates recommended under UPSC exam 2025, only 33.1% are from open merit

New Delhi, March 6: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Thursday announced the final recommendations for the Civil Services Examination 2025, with 958 candidates selected for appointment to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Central Services.

Category-wise selection

As per an official handout, of the 958 recommended candidates, the largest share comes from the General (Open Merit) category with 317 candidates, representing about 33.1% of the total selections.

Candidates from reserved categories together account for roughly 66.9% of the final list. The break-up includes:

Other Backward Classes (OBC): 306 candidates — 31.9%

Scheduled Castes (SC): 158 candidates — 16.5%

Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): 104 candidates — 10.9%

Scheduled Tribes (ST): 73 candidates — 7.6%

The list also includes 42 Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) across categories, including 10 orthopedically disabled, 14 visually challenged, 9 hearing impaired, and 9 with multiple disabilities.

Vacancies across services
Appointments will be made against 1,087 vacancies reported by the Government of India across various services. The largest share is in Central Services Group ‘A’ with 507 posts, followed by Group ‘B’ services with 195 posts, 180 vacancies in the IAS, 150 in the IPS, and 55 in the IFS.

Reserve and extended lists
The UPSC has also maintained a consolidated reserve list of 258 candidates, which includes 129 from the General category, 26 from EWS, 86 from OBC, 8 from SC, and 6 from ST categories, along with candidates from disability categories. An extended list has also been prepared in accordance with the examination rules.

Additional notes
The commission stated that the candidature of 348 recommended candidates remains provisional, while the results of two candidates have been withheld. Verification of candidates’ claims regarding reservation categories will be carried out by the concerned authorities before final appointments.

The results and related details are available on the UPSC’s official website, and individual marks will be published within 15 days of the result declaration.
