Kashmir’s SAGG Eco Village Gains Global Recognition for Sustainability

Ziraat Times News Desk

Srinagar, Mar 16: A regenerative tourism initiative in the Himalayan foothills of Kashmir Valley has drawn international attention after becoming the first enterprise in the region to receive dual global sustainability validation.

SAGG Eco Village Private Limited, founded by Kashmiri entrepreneur Fayaz Ahmad Dar, has been independently recognised under two international sustainability frameworks, highlighting its model of regenerative tourism and circular economy practices.

Global Sustainability Validation

In March 2026, Climate KIC released a Circularity Validation Report for SAGG Eco Village, placing it among top-performing circular economy enterprises globally.

On a five-point scale used to evaluate sustainability performance, the eco village scored Level 5 — “Circularity Champion” in three categories: Business Model, Product/Service, and Contribution to Local Circularity. Its materials circularity rating reached Level 4 — “Circularity Trendsetter.”

The validation forms part of the ClimAccelerator programme, supported by the IKEA Foundation and implemented with the support of SecondMuse.

Environmental Impact

An environmental impact scorecard prepared by GREENR — a programme of TechnoServe working with J-PAL — highlighted measurable ecological benefits generated by the eco village.

During the 2023–24 financial year, the retreat composted 1,350 kilograms of kitchen waste, preventing nearly 1,500 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions that would otherwise have been generated in landfills.

Its natural wastewater treatment system also helped conserve about one million litres of freshwater, protecting local spring ecosystems in the Himalayan foothills.

According to the report, the eco village’s total operational emissions — including energy use and kitchen fuel — amounted to 2,625 kilograms of CO₂-equivalent for the year, roughly comparable to emissions from a single passenger flying round-trip between Delhi and London.

Regenerative Tourism Model

Unlike conventional hospitality businesses, SAGG Eco Village operates as a working regenerative landscape combining eco-tourism, agriculture and circular resource management.

Guests stay in mud-insulated traditional huts, designed to remain warm during Kashmir’s harsh winters with minimal electricity. Food is largely sourced from surrounding orchards or nearby farms, while waste materials are reused or upcycled into decorative and functional items.

The eco village follows several internationally recognised circular economy practices, including eliminating single-use plastics, adopting regenerative agriculture and minimising energy consumption.

Awards and Recognition

The initiative has also gained recognition in the tourism sector. In 2025, SAGG Eco Village won the Silver Award for Climate Action at the ICRT Indian Subcontinent Responsible Tourism Awards — the first time a Kashmiri enterprise received recognition at the platform.

It also secured a Gold Award for Grassroots Action at the Outlook Responsible Tourism Summit and another Gold Award at the TOFT Nature Tourism Awards.

The recognitions position the Kashmir-based eco village as an emerging example of how tourism in fragile mountain ecosystems can balance visitor experiences with environmental restoration and community-based sustainability.
