Srinagar, March 28: The Jammu & Kashmir government has signed an implementation agreement with NHPC Limited to develop two hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 500 megawatts, one each in Kashmir and Chenab regions.
The agreement covers the development of the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II and 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II hydroelectric projects. According to official disclosures made under the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s listing regulations, the projects will be developed, owned and operated by NHPC on a BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) basis for a period of 40 years, after which they will be transferred to J&K government.
The implementation agreement was signed in Jammu on March 27, 2026, between NHPC Limited and the Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited during the ongoing legislative assembly session in the region.
NHPC has been operating several hydropower projects in Jammu & Kashmir since the early 2000s under a memorandum of understanding with the government. These include Salal (690 MW), Uri-I (480 MW), Dulhasti (390 MW), Sewa-II (120 MW), Uri-II (240 MW) and Kishanganga (330 MW), with a combined capacity of 2,250 MW.
In addition, two major hydropower projects — the 850 MW Ratle and 1,000 MW Pakal Dul — are currently under construction through joint venture companies formed between NHPC and the Jammu & Kashmir power development corporation.
Under the existing arrangements, Jammu & Kashmir receives over 12 percent of the electricity generated from NHPC-operated projects as its share, while the remaining power is fed into the national grid. The Union Territory purchases additional electricity from the grid to meet its energy deficit.
The Dulhasti Stage-II project is planned as an extension of the existing Dulhasti hydroelectric project, which was commissioned in 2007, while Uri Stage-II is proposed on the Jhelum River in the Baramulla district as an extension of the Uri Stage-I plant.
Once operational, the Uri Stage-II project is expected to generate about 932.60 million units of electricity annually, while Dulhasti Stage-II is projected to produce approximately 1,093.11 million units of power.
