New Delhi, Mar 14: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed the approval of two food processing units with a total investment of ₹78.6 crore under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industries (PLISFPI), the government informed Parliament on Friday.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu said that the PLISFPI, implemented from FY 2021-22 to FY 2026-27, has approved 168 applicants across the country, including 69 from the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) category. A total cumulative investment of ₹9,207 crore has been mobilized till December 31, 2025, creating processing and preservation capacity of around 35 lakh metric tonnes per annum and generating approximately 3.29 lakh direct and indirect jobs nationwide.

Investments and beneficiaries

Under the PLISFPI Scheme, investments and approvals have been made across diverse segments including Ready-to-Eat/Ready-to-Cook foods, fruits and vegetables, marine products, innovative foods, organic products, and millet-based products. Out of the 168 approved applicants, 40 contract manufacturing units also belong to MSMEs, while two applicants are cooperatives and 13 belong to the organic segment.

Bihar, for example, has seen approval of seven food processing units with a total investment of ₹660.37 crore, while other leading states include Maharashtra (₹1,368.71 crore), Gujarat (₹1,599.88 crore), and Andhra Pradesh (₹1,313.33 crore).

Objectives and impact

The scheme is aimed at creating global food manufacturing champions, promoting Indian brands, increasing off-farm employment, ensuring remunerative prices for farm produce, and raising farmer incomes. Incentives are provided where all manufacturing processes, including primary processing, occur in India, with additional support for branding and marketing abroad.

The PLISFPI Scheme is part of the government’s broader effort to boost India’s food processing sector, enhance employment opportunities, and strengthen domestic and export markets for Indian food products.

Officials noted that Jammu & Kashmir’s approved units are now operational, contributing to the region’s industrial growth and supporting local farmers through increased processing capacity and market linkages.
