Srinagar, Mar 2: Precautionary restrictions remained in force across Kashmir on Monday, leading to the closure of educational institutions, curbs on internet speed and disruption of normal business activity in several districts.
According to officials, authorities continued district-wide measures as a preventive step in view of the prevailing situation following developments in West Asia. Schools and colleges across the Valley remained shut, while mobile internet services operated at reduced speeds. Officials indicated that the measures are temporary and subject to review based on ground assessments.
Business establishments in parts of Srinagar and other districts witnessed partial to significant closure, particularly in downtown areas and sensitive localities. Traders reported low footfall and early shutdown of markets amid uncertainty and security deployment at key intersections.
Security personnel were stationed at major junctions and identified sensitive locations to maintain order. Senior officers reviewed the situation throughout the day, officials said, adding that the overall situation remained under control.
Parents and students expressed concern over academic disruption, especially as several institutions are in the middle of examinations and new academic sessions. Slow internet connectivity also affected online services, digital transactions, and routine commercial operations, traders said.
In addition to Srinagar, restrictions impacted parts of Budgam, Bandipora, Pulwama and other districts in both North and South Kashmir. Similar precautionary measures were reported in Kargil district of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
A senior official said restrictions would continue on Tuesday as a precautionary measure to ensure stability. “The situation is being closely monitored and necessary arrangements are in place to maintain normalcy,” the official said.
The developments come at a time when businesses are already navigating economic pressures, with trade bodies informally indicating that repeated closures and connectivity curbs have a direct bearing on daily commerce, transport, education delivery and service sectors across the Valley.
Authorities reiterated that the measures are preventive in nature and aimed at ensuring public safety while maintaining essential services.
