New Delhi: The Union government has approved a major infrastructure project worth ₹1,196.22 crore for the construction of a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel across Fotu La Pass on Srinagar-Leh National Highway 1 (India), officials said.
The project includes the development of approach roads and is aimed at improving connectivity along the strategic highway that links Uri, Srinagar and Leh.
National Highway-1 currently traverses Fotu La at an altitude of around 4,108 metres, making it the highest point on the highway. The route serves as a crucial strategic corridor and the primary supply line to Ladakh. However, the existing stretch is known for steep gradients and several hairpin bends, and it frequently remains closed during winter months due to heavy snowfall and icing.
According to officials, the new project will cover a total length of 2.65 kilometres, including a 1.96 km twin-tube tunnel and 0.69 km of approach roads.
Once completed, the tunnel is expected to provide safer and more reliable all-weather connectivity in the region. It will also shorten the travel distance by about 8.5 kilometres, offering significant logistical and strategic advantages for transport and supply movement to Ladakh.
