Jammu, Feb 3: The Centre has approved a Jammu & Kashmir government project to provide 200 units of free electricity per month to 2.23 lakh Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, who fall under the below poverty line (BPL) category in the Union Territory.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the approval on Monday while addressing the opening day of the Budget Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He said the project has been sanctioned by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, following a recommendation from the J&K government.
The scheme will be implemented under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana – Utility Led Aggregation (ULA) model and aims to provide substantial relief to economically weaker households by ensuring access to free electricity through renewable energy solutions.
“The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has accorded approval to a project for providing 200 free units of electricity to 2.23 lakh AAY families of Jammu and Kashmir. The project will be implemented soon,” the Lt Governor said.
The initiative is expected to directly benefit the poorest households in the Union Territory by reducing their monthly electricity expenses and promoting the use of clean energy, while also aligning with broader national goals of energy security and social inclusion.
