New Delhi, January 2: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Wednesday clarified that there has been no increase in the price of domestic LPG cylinders, even as commercial LPG prices have been revised in line with international market trends. The clarification comes amid reports suggesting a hike in LPG prices, which the government said were being misinterpreted.
According to the Ministry, the price of domestic LPG for household consumers remains unchanged, with strong safeguards in place to protect families from global price volatility. The clarification follows the revision in prices of commercial LPG cylinders, which are linked to international benchmarks and subject to market fluctuations.
Domestic LPG Prices Remain Protected
The government reiterated that domestic LPG prices are shielded from global price volatility through targeted subsidies. While the average international price of LPG (Saudi CP) increased by about 21% between July 2023 and November 2025, domestic LPG prices were reduced by around 22% during the same period.
Currently, the effective price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder stands at:
-
₹853 for non-PMUY consumers in Delhi
-
₹553 for PMUY beneficiaries, reflecting a 39% reduction from August 2023 levels
The government has also approved a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to nine refills per year under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), with a total budgetary outlay of ₹12,000 crore for 2025–26.
Commercial LPG Prices Linked to Global Market
The Ministry clarified that prices of commercial LPG cylinders are market-determined and linked to international benchmarks. India imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirement, making domestic prices sensitive to global fluctuations.
Despite rising global prices, the government absorbed a significant portion of the cost burden. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) incurred losses of approximately ₹40,000 crore in 2024–25 due to the decision not to pass on higher international prices to domestic consumers. To compensate, the government has approved ₹30,000 crore to support OMCs and ensure uninterrupted supply.
CNG and PNG Prices Reduced in Select Cities
In additional relief for consumers, prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have been reduced in select cities starting January 1. The reduction follows adjustments in pipeline tariffs and is expected to benefit households and transport users while promoting cleaner fuels.
India Among Cheapest LPG Markets Globally
A comparative assessment shows that domestic LPG in India remains significantly cheaper than in neighbouring countries. As of November 2025:
-
India (Delhi): ₹553 (PMUY) / ₹853 (non-PMUY)
-
Pakistan (Lahore): ₹902
-
Sri Lanka (Colombo): ₹1,227
-
Nepal (Kathmandu): ₹1,205
