Ziraat Times Team Report

Srinagar: The President of the Jammu and Kashmir Fruits and Vegetables Processing and Integrated Cold Chain Association (JKPICCA) on Tuesday participated in the Pre-Budget Consultation chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, submitting a detailed set of proposals aimed at strengthening the Union Territory’s horticulture sector.

The delegation was led by JKPICCA President Bashir Ahmad Naik.

During the meeting, JKPICCA presented a multi-dimensional budget proposal focusing on the holistic development of horticulture, with emphasis on farmer welfare, crop risk mitigation, post-harvest management, cold chain infrastructure, renewable energy adoption, and industrial infrastructure support. The proposals were outlined point-by-point, underscoring the economic significance of horticulture and the need for targeted budgetary interventions to ensure sectoral sustainability and growth.

The Chief Minister gave a patient and attentive hearing to the issues and suggestions raised by JKPICCA and appreciated the structured, sector-focused approach adopted in the presentation.

Following the meeting, JKPICCA also raised concerns regarding the proposed Shopian–Kakapora railway line, requesting the Chief Minister to revisit the decision in light of apprehensions expressed by the local population and the potential impact on prime horticulture land.

Responding to the concerns, the Chief Minister assured that the matter had already been taken up with the concerned Ministry at the Centre. He conveyed that the Centre has ensured the proposed railway alignment would not go against the will of the people, particularly at the cost of the horticulture sector, which forms the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy.

JKPICCA expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his responsive and constructive approach and reiterated its commitment to working closely with the government for the sustainable growth of horticulture and allied sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
