National Grid Sees Transmission Losses at 3–4%;  Northern Region at 3.15%

Ziraat Times News Desk

New Delhi, Dec 4:
India’s power transmission losses currently range between 3–4%, with regional variations documented in the latest General Review report released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in November 2025. The data, presented in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Power Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, outlines region-wise losses recorded during 2023–24.

Region-Wise Transmission Losses (%)

  • Northern Region: 3.15%

  • Western Region: 3.12%

  • Southern Region: 3.46%

  • Eastern Region: 4.24%

  • North Eastern Region: 3.89%

Measures to Reduce Transmission Losses

To curb losses in power transmission lines, the Centre and State Transmission Utilities are implementing several technical and systemic improvements, including:

  • Expansion and strengthening of transmission networks

  • Adoption of higher voltage systems to improve efficiency

  • Reactive power management and improved operational practices to stabilise voltage and reduce wastage

  • Modernisation of transmission infrastructure, including deployment of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and EMS (Energy Management System) technologies

Support Through Central Schemes

The Government of India is augmenting state efforts through key power sector schemes such as:

  • Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)

  • Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS)

  • Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA)

These initiatives aim to strengthen distribution networks and ensure reliable, quality electricity for all households.

The Minister noted that concerted efforts at both central and state levels are helping improve system efficiency and reduce technical losses across the national grid.
