SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced the construction of 1,500 free houses for families affected by Operation Sindoor, recent floods, and terror-related incidents.
The initiative, spearheaded by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, aims to provide not just shelter but dignity and security to the worst-hit families. “Construction of houses is more than just putting up a structure. It is about building dreams, a fresh start, and a new chapter in the lives of affected families. Human losses are so profound and devastating that they can’t be measured, but this initiative will definitely ease their suffering,” the Lt Governor said while presiding over the MoU signing ceremony at Raj Bhawan.
The High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS India) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir for the project. The houses, designed as three-bedroom “Smart Houses,” will feature modern safety and comfort provisions.
Besides housing, the project includes additional benefits: 15-year life insurance cover for family members, monthly health check-ups, free internet access through BSNL, and regular visits by HRDS-trained volunteers to provide information on government schemes, health, and education. Each house will also be repainted every five years at no cost to the beneficiaries.
The initiative will also cover families whose houses were destroyed by terrorists, with Divisional Commissioners tasked to help identify eligible households.
Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the LG; Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner Jammu; Anshul Garg, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir; and senior officials of HRDS India including its Founder-Secretary Aji Krishnan were present at the MoU signing ceremony.
The LG hailed the effort as a “noble endeavour” and said it reflects his administration’s commitment to empowering and safeguarding the future of those affected by natural calamities and cross-border shelling.
