Jammu: In a rare weather event, Jammu City recorded 190.4 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours (till 8:30 a.m.), making it the second-highest single-day rainfall for the month of August in nearly 100 years.
According to data, the highest-ever August downpour in Jammu was 228.6 mm, registered on August 5, 1926. The latest rainfall has now overtaken the earlier second-highest record of 189.6 mm logged on August 11, 2022.
The intense showers have also swelled rivers in the region. Authorities said the water level of the Ujh River in Kathua district crossed the danger mark at 9 a.m.
At Panjtirthi, the river’s discharge was measured at 108,750 cusecs, significantly above the danger level of 88,000 cusecs. The alert level there is 48,000 cusecs, while evacuation measures are triggered if the flow touches 135,000 cusecs.
At Kathua, the Ujh was flowing at 106,160 cusecs, compared to the alert level of 52,341 cusecs and danger mark of 95,099 cusecs. The evacuation threshold at this point is 144,701 cusecs.
Officials have cautioned residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as the situation is being closely monitored.
The heavy rains have disrupted normal life in parts of Jammu, with reports of waterlogging and traffic diversions in some localities. More showers are forecast in the coming hours, according to Kashmir Weather.
