Jammu records highest-ever 380 mm rainfall in 24 hrs

Ziraat Times Team Report

Srinagar: In an unprecedented weather event, Jammu has received 380 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, the highest ever recorded since the establishment of the Jammu observatory in 1910.

According to Kashmir Weather, an independent weather monitoring service, the downpour has shattered all previous records by a huge margin.

The earlier record stood at 270.4 mm, recorded on September 25, 1988. Another significant high was 218.4 mm logged on August 23, 1996. Both figures have now been eclipsed by the latest rainfall tally.

What makes this even more extraordinary is that the 24-hour rainfall figure of 380 mm is nearly equal to Jammu’s monthly average rainfall for August, which is 403.1 mm.

“This is a historical first. Such an extreme downpour in a single day is not just rare but also unprecedented in the recorded weather history of Jammu,” Kashmir Weather said in its update.

Meteorologists warn that such heavy rainfall increases the risk of flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage, particularly in vulnerable districts of Jammu division. Authorities have advised people to stay away from rivers and streams as water levels continue to rise.

The exceptional rainfall event comes amid a spell of intense monsoon activity across Jammu & Kashmir, which has already triggered multiple landslides, cloudbursts, and flooding incidents in recent days.
