G. A. Peer, former Commr Secretary, passes away, tributes pour in

Srinagar: G. A. Peer, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former Commissioner Secretary to the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, passed away in Srinagar on Sunday following a brief illness. A native of Seer Hamdan in Anantnag district, Peer’s demise has left a void in the administrative and civil society circles of the region.

Family sources said that the veteran civil servant had been unwell. He breathed his last at a Srinagar hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment. News of his passing triggered an outpouring of tributes and condolences from all sections of society.

Prominent public figures, civil servants (retired and serving), politicians and common citizens took to social media platform X to express their grief and admiration for Peer’s long-standing public service.

Naeem Akhtar, former minister and spokesperson J&K government, wrote: “Extremely sad to hear about the passing of dear friend, colleague and a noble human being GA Peer. Condolences to Basharat and family.”

A former colleague,  Nazir Ahmed, posted on Facebook: “Saddened to learn about the passing of G. A. Peer Sahib. He was a fine officer, deeply connected with people’s issues and committed to integrity in governance. Heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Another former colleague, Inayatullah Sheikh wrote: “A gentleman and a thorough professional, G. A. Peer’s departure is a loss to the administrative history of J&K. His humility and simplicity set him apart. Prayers for peace to his soul.”

A Kashmiri academic posted: “Seer Hamdan has lost one of its finest sons. G. A. Peer was not just an administrator, but a symbol of grace and uprightness. He represented the best values of civil service.”

G. A. Peer served the Jammu & Kashmir administration in various capacities during his career. Known for his humility, people-centric approach and dedication to good governance, Peer left a strong imprint on colleagues and citizens alike.
