New Delhi — In a dramatic escalation of trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a sweeping 25% tariff on all imports from India, effective August 1. The announcement was made via a fiery post on his Truth Social platform, triggering immediate reactions from global markets and Indian policymakers.
In his post, Trump wrote: “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country… INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”
He further cited India’s continued purchase of Russian military equipment and energy — especially during the Ukraine conflict — as contributing factors behind the decision, calling them “ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”
Would the move impact any products from Jammu & Kashmir?
The move is expected to have something degree of ramifications for exporters in Jammu & Kashmir, especially those dealing in handicrafts, carpets, pashmina, saffron, dried fruits and basmati rice — products that enjoy considerable demand in U.S. markets. With U.S. consumers potentially facing higher prices, Kashmiri products could lose competitiveness, leading to declining export orders and potential financial stress for thousands of artisans and farmers in the region, assuming the move is not reversed soon.
India’s Ministry of Commerce and External Affairs are yet to issue an official response, but sources indicate that backchannel diplomacy is already underway.
