From Srinagar to Pahalgam, Kashmir’s nighttime temps break records last night

Ziraat Times News Desk

Srinagar: Parts of Kashmir experienced their warmest July night on record, with Srinagar registering a minimum temperature of 25.2°C, matching its all-time highest July low last recorded on 21 July 1988, according to Kashmir Weather, an independent forecasting platform.

This rare high night-time temperature means Srinagar did not cool down overnight, adding to the ongoing discomfort from a prolonged heat spell. The second-highest minimum temperature for the city was 24.8°C, recorded just last year on 29 July 2024.

Weather experts note a clear trend: 2022, 2024, and now 2025 are among the warmest Julys ever recorded in the Kashmir Valley, with rising night-time temperatures indicating broader climatic changes.

Other stations across the region also recorded record or near-record minimum temperatures:

  • Kokernag saw a low of 22.6°C, matching its all-time highest minimum last observed on 2 July 2005.

  • Pahalgam, traditionally known for its cool climate, reported 20.0°C, the second-highest minimum ever, just below 20.2°C recorded on 30 July 2013.

  • Qazigund recorded 23.1°C, also its second-highest, behind 23.4°C recorded earlier this week on 5 July 2025.

Meteorologists caution that persistently high minimum temperatures increase heat stress, particularly for the elderly, children, and those without access to cooling. These patterns, they warn, reflect the intensifying effects of climate change, and call for enhanced monitoring, preparedness, and adaptation measures.
