The long-awaited inauguration of the Srinagar-Katra rail link marks a significant milestone in the history of Jammu & Kashmir’s infrastructure development. Described rightly as “historic and transformative”, this project offers more than just an alternative to the oft-shut Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. It is critical to daily life for a region home to nearly 8 million Kashmiris and many more in Ladakh.
The new railway segment is expected to provide year-round, weather-resilient transportation, an achievement that cannot be overstated. Farmers, businesspeople, students and medical patients have all endured costly disruptions due to landslides and weather closures along the highway. The rail link brings with it the promise of greater reliability, affordability and accessibility.
But for this ambitious initiative to become truly meaningful and equitable for the people of Kashmir and Ladakh, a direct, long-distance train service between Srinagar and New Delhi must be the next urgent step. A Srinagar–Delhi express, without the burden of unnecessary halts or train changes, would be a game-changer. It would facilitate easier movement of people, bolster confidence among tourists and foster much deeper economic integration.
The demand is not just for passenger comfort. A robust rail freight system out of Srinagar is vital. The region’s horticultural produce – apples, cherries, walnuts – vegetables and world-renowned handicrafts are time-sensitive commodities. Cargo train operations would ensure these goods reach markets in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata faster, fresher and at lower costs. It would also make the import of raw materials for local industries more efficient.
Jammu & Kashmir has long struggled with logistical handicaps. A direct rail access to Srinagar is not a luxury – it is a necessity. The foundation has been laid with the Katra-Srinagar link. Now is the time to think bigger and move faster.
