“We waited patiently”: J&K Open Merit Students Association  calls for immediate action on promised reforms

Srinagar: The Open Merit Student Association of Jammu and Kashmir (OMSAJK) has issued a pressing appeal to the government, urging swift implementation of promised reforms to ensure fairness in the reservation policy. In a press release, OMSAJK emphasized the growing distress among students and job aspirants due to the lack of visible progress on commitments made by the authorities.

OMSAJK acknowledged that systemic reforms take time but stressed that immediate relief measures, promised over a month ago, cannot be delayed further. The association highlighted that the General Category youth of Jammu & Kashmir have been waiting patiently, but their patience ‘should not be mistaken for weakness.’

The authorities had assured the implementation of actionable measures within a reasonable timeframe. However, the absence of tangible progress has led to increasing frustration among students and job seekers OMSAJK said adding  it has demanded that all recruitments be halted until the promised reforms are implemented.

OMSAJK outlined four urgent demands that require immediate attention:

1. Relaxation of residential criteria while maintaining the income bar, along with a reduction in EWS reservation as the first step toward rationalization.
2. Strict Enforcement of SRO-49: Ensuring that specialty courses follow merit-based selection processes.
3. Amendment of Rule-17: Addressing issues affecting jobs and admissions to create a fairer system.
4. Correction of Excessive Horizontal Reservations: Restoring balance in the system to ensure merit-based opportunities for all.
