Anantnag/Kulgam: Amid freezing winter conditions in South Kashmir, with temperatures usually ranging between minus 8°C and minus 2°C, residents of several villages reported on social media an unusual and sudden surge in warmth on Saturday. The phenomenon was observed in many villages including Godool, Nandigram, and Daksum in Anantnag, as well as D.H. Pora and Nandimarg in Kulgam.
Residents contacted by Ziraat Times described the event as a “warm wave,” with temperatures suddenly feeling like they had risen to nearly 20°C. Snow-covered ground reportedly began to melt faster, leaving residents bewildered and concerned.
Social media platforms like Facebook were abuzz with unconfirmed reports of this unusual occurrence, but as of now, no official statement has been issued by meteorological, geological, or earth sciences departments.
If confirmed, what it could be?
South Kashmir is known for its geothermal activity, with numerous warm springs scattered across the area. These natural springs, experts say, are often linked to underground volcanic or tectonic activity, which may release heat to the surface. However, a sudden temperature burst of this magnitude has not been documented in recent history, adding to the alarm.
Two years ago, a stream in the area developed a large sinkhole, causing water to drain away and resulting in irrigation challenges for local farmers. This history of unusual geological activity has raised questions about whether the recent temperature anomaly might be connected to subterranean changes.
What experts say
While the exact cause remains speculative at this stage, two earth sciences Ziraat Times apoke to said there were several possibilities for this sudden warm temperature burst.
“If true, the presence of warm springs suggests that geothermal heat may be escaping more forcefully than usual. This could be due to shifting underground heat patterns or increased pressure in geothermal reservoirs”, said one expert.
He also said that minor seismic activity, even without a detectable earthquake, can cause heat to rise from below the Earth’s surface. This could explain the sudden warmth felt in isolated areas.
Another expert said that this could be as a result of changes in the area’s water table or underground aquifers which could interact with geothermal systems, leading to the release of heat and warm air pockets.
Panic and uncertainty among residents
While some netizens dismissed the reports as rumours, the sudden temperature surge reports has caused panic among residents, with many fearing it could be a precursor to a larger geological or climatic event.
Experts say that given the unusual nature of this phenomenon, it is crucial for geological and meteorological experts to investigate the event. Understanding the cause is essential to mitigate fears and assess whether there are broader implications for the region.
Until an official statement is issued, residents have been advised to avoid panic and remain calm and vigilant.
