Plantation Drive Held to Promote Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Gurez Valley

Gurez, Sept 10: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) conducted a plantation drive in the picturesque Gurez Valley. The event was organized by Division of Forest Products and Utilization, Faculty of Forestry, in collaboration with MARES Gurez.

The initiative was led by Dr. P.A. Sofi, Head of the Division of Forest Products and Utilization, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-K, who was joined by a team of scientists from the division and their counterparts from MARES Gurez, an official press statement said.

“The plantation drive held in Gurez Valley was a remarkable effort to introduce medicinal and Aromatic plant cultivation in the region. Under the guidance of Dr. Sofi and his team, various high-potential medicinal plants, including the fragrant lavender and Rosemary, were planted. This endeavor aligns with the vision of promoting sustainable agriculture and harnessing the rich biodiversity of the Gurez Valley”, the statement added.

Dr. P.A. Sofi, along with  scientists Dr. A.R. Malik, Dr. Tahir Mushtaq, and Dr. Bilal Ahmad, Head of MARES Gurez, also visited the High-Altitude Medicinal Plant Nursery located in Nayal Gurez. The nursery was developed by Division of Forest Products and Utilization in collaboration with AYUSH.

The Division of FPU, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-K remains committed to its mission of advancing Medicinal and Aromatic plant cultivation for the betterment of society. This initiative in Gurez Valley is a testament to the University’s dedication to sustainable practices and the preservation of biodiversity of the region which will have positive impact on the region’s ecological and economic landscape.
