New York flooding: Highest rain in 75 years in single day ignites climate debate

Ziraat Times News Desk

An unprecedented  flooding situation was witnessed in New York City on Friday when nearly 8 inches of rain fell in New York city, the highest amount since 1948. In Brooklyn, a posh city neighborhood, a month’s worth of rain fell in just three hours.

The flooding caused major disruptions to transportation and infrastructure. Subway lines were suspended, roads were closed, and power outages were reported. Several buildings collapsed, and many others were damaged. Images and videos circulated on social media indicated numerous cars on roads got inundated under water and their occupants had to be rescued.

Thousands of people were displaced from their homes and businesses.

The flooding also caused significant environmental damage. Sewage and other pollutants were washed into waterways, and debris was scattered throughout the city.

Experts believe that the flooding in New York City is a reminder of the growing risks posed by climate change. Extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, are becoming more frequent and intense across the world. This is due to the fact that the Earth’s atmosphere is warming, which can hold more moisture.

Several politicians and urban planning experts wrote on social media that the flooding in New York City also highlights the need for better flood preparedness and adaptation measures. The city’s aging infrastructure is not well-equipped to handle extreme rainfall events, they said.
