Shahr-e-Khass TMCC condemns action against Maharaj Bazar vendors

Srinagar, Jan 29: Shahr-e-Khass Traders And Manufacturers Coordination Committee has condemned the municipal corporation’s actions against Maharaji Bazar vendors on Friday.

In a joint statement issued to Ziraat Times by the committee President Bashir Ahmad Kanu, Senior Vice President Arif Ahmad Wani, General Secretary Ajaz Ahmad Pampori, Spokesperson Javed Habib and President of Zainakadal Market Mohammad Ashraf, the influential business body said that the vendors are there from more than 30 years, most of whom are well educated, but, unfortunately, joblessness has pushed them to roadside vendor business to earn their livelihoods and to feed there families.

“Traffic jam is a problem and there is no doubt about it, but suitable parking slots should be the remedy for this traffic mess. The Administration has diverted the traffic at Jahangir Chowk and has restricted the cab movement in the city”, the committee said, adding ‘if there is a traffic mess then surely traffic management approaches have a role to play.’

“Roads need to be further enhanced by smart city projects of road expansion. We are questioning the administration what they want to do with the city if they are only going to do these kinds of actions? Cities will look like villages because trade would come to a standstill and the market cannot continue their business”, the committee further said.

“Administration needs to provide street vendors a place where they can continue their bussiness with dignity and honour. The administration is seizing the stocks of vendors without any notice which is totally unjustified and unjust. How can they after the action identify their stocks? It is a total loss for them”, the committee said.

“This is the question of thousands of families and their livelihoods being on stake. The administration is requested to adopt the way which will be fruitful to both street vendors as well the administration”, the joint statement added.

Expressing their surprise in the manner the weekend lockdown is implemented, the committee said that while an official circular had mentioned that essential services should remain open but the enforcement agencies, according to best of our knowledge, has not received that circular or are unaware. This makes markets shut abruptly due to confusion, resulting in considerable economic loss.
