Stakeholders meet at Pampore to discuss climate change

Pampore Nov 16: Several stakeholders gathered at Kashmir’s saffron town of Pampore on Tuesday to discuss climate change and global warming. The event was hosted by Birla Open Minds International School Pampore. Stakeholders which included forest officers, civilian administration, police officers, environmental activists and teachers brainstormed on  the importance of trees and forests. The event was jointly organised by the Department of Social Forestry in association with Birla Open Minds International School Pampore.

Regional Director Social Forestry Department Kashmir  Mehraj-ud-din Malik urged the school teachers and other stakeholders to understand the importance of trees as they serve as the kidneys of earth. He said that he was impressed to see a good amount of plantation was done in the Birla school campus Pampore. He said that his department would assist any educational institution for afforestation programmes.

Dr Raja Muzaffar, Social activist and writer in his address said that world leaders seem to be serious now on climate change and afforestation as most of the countries have resolved during COP 26 conference to halt deforestation and land degradation by 2030. He appreciated the Trustees of Birla Open Minds School for holding such an event during late autumn season when no such activities are held.

Research Scholar at Harvard Medical School Dr Shabir Hassan said that by sending emails or whatsapp messages we are involved in carbon emissions. He said that global warming was a great threat to earth and the only way to counter this is to go for massive plantation drives. Chairman Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation Manzoor Wangnoo spoke about Mission Ehasas and cleaning of Gilsar Khushal Sir lakes in Srinagar old city. The OSD to Chief Secretary Waseem Farooq, General Secretary BML Trust G M Lone, Sheikh Gayasudin Campus Director Birla School also spoke on the occasion.

Manzoor Ahmad Bhat DFO  Social Forestry, Pulwama, Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir SDPO Pampore, Ishtiyaq Mohi-ud-din Tehsildar Pampore, Ab Aziz Mir Chairman B.M.L Welfare Trust, Dr Rouf Malik Director Koshish NGO , Dr Sheikh Fayaz Asst Professor Zhejiang University China, Mir Ajaz Director JK Construction Group. Younis Nisar Mir Trustee B.M.L Welfare Trust, Sakeena Shafi Vice Principal Birla Open Minds School were also present on the occasion.

At the end of the event the participants undertook a plantation drive in the school campus by planting more than two dozen deodar plants in the campus.
