Srinagar SCI adopts 252 million-year-old Khonmoh fossil site

Ziraat Times Team Report

Srinagar, Oct 21: In a significant development, Srinagar Smart City Initiative has adopted the 252 million year old Guryul Ravine fossil site at Khonmoh, Srinagar. Guryul is a repository of priceless treasures of fossils of the Permian-Triassic (PT) Mass Extinction Event.
Commissioner SMC and CEO Smart City Project Athar Amir Khan, while inaugurating a historic workshop organized by Environmental Policy Group (EPG) in association with Srinagar Smart City Initiative today, said that the Khonmoh fossil site was a crucial one and that the Srinagar Smart City initiative would take every possible measure for its development and preservation.
The workshop was attended by Faiz Bakshi (convenor of EPG), Saleem Beg (Convenor INTACH, J&K chapter), Advocate Nadeem Qadri, Mauzam Bakshi and other geo-scientists, geologists, members of the university faculty, town planners, architects, heads of departments the representatives of Geology & Mining, archeology Wildlife Dept, Forest Dept, Revenue Department, J&K Police, members of the civil society, local representatives and inhabitants.
On the occasion, prominent geologist Dr GM Bhat provided a detailed account of the Ravine.
The key attraction of the workshop was an exhibition of fossils hunted at site and an exhibition in chronological events of geological events dating back to 252 million years and the evidence of world’s first tsunami lying buried at this site at Khonmoh.

“EPG thanks CEO Srinagar Smart City for adopting Guryul Ravine, the fossils of the great extinction also known as the mother of extinctions”, Faiz Bakshi, convenor of EPG said on the occasion.

Why is the Guryul Khonmoh site so significant?

(1) The Guryul Ravines , Khonmoh, geologically known as Vihi District , are the repository fossil beds dating back to 260 million years (pre-Dinosaur Permian period).

(2)The Tethys Ocean existed where Guryul Ravine, Khonmoh, now stands.

(3) The Guryul Ravine rocks are scientifically critical for geological research on the Permian/Triassic boundary which saw sudden extinction of upto 90% of all marine species and 70% of land species living about 252 million years ago.

(4)The Guryul Ravines is world famous as being among the most complete and important of that period and enjoyed Global Stratotype status till 2004; yet has been little studied.

(5)The events of massive extinction ( known as mother of extinctions) 252 million years ago are best preserved in Kashmir.

(6)The World’s first ever recorded Tsunami event is well preserved in the rocks of Guryul Ravines.

(7)The Geologists from all over the World especially from U.S.A,U.K,Ireland, China,Japan,Canada,Switzerland,Austria, Scotland etc have been visiting this area for furthering their research studies.

(8)The Khonmoh PT section of 3 metres is much much larger than 27 cms of Meishan. Section(China) attracting millions of tourists. This fact is acknowledged by Chinese geologists as well who visited Kashmir for examining it.

(9) A memorandum of understanding has been signed by Penn Dixie Fossil Park & Natural Reserve New York, USA- the World’s largest Fossil Park in providing technical support required for development of Kashmir Triassic Fossil Park.
