Dr Mumtaz Khan, Founder Al Ameen Education Movement, passes away: A ZT tribute

Srinagar: Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, Founder of the Al Ameen Education Movement in India, has passed away.

Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan (born 6 September 1935) was a wellknown educationist & social reformer known for founding the Al-Ameen Educational Society and its corresponding colleges.

Thousands of students of Jammu & Kashmir have obtained their professional degrees from Al Ameen Trust-run colleges in South India and have made immense contributions in the areas of science and technology.

Ziraat Times’ founder, Arjimand Hussain, an alumni of one of the engineering colleges of Al Ameen Education Society, while paying his tributes to Dr Khan, said that he will be long remembered as a pioneer and visionary who made tremendous contribution in promoting modern and scientific education among Muslims in India.

“His demise has left a big void, which is hard to be fulfilled any time soon. Dr Mumtaz’s demise comes only a few weeks after the sad demise of Dr Mohammad Haneef, principal of Ghousia College of Engineering and Technology. It is now time for the younger educational visionaries to come forward and take up the mantle of spreading modern education in the challenging new times”, Mr Arjimand said.

Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Khan earned a MBBS degree from Madras University, Chennai, and became a general practitioner. In 1966, at the age of 31, he founded the Al-Ameen Educational Society

At the age of 31, in 1966 Khan founded the Al-Ameen Movement. Al-ameen movement is currently running 250+ educational institutions with more than 2.5 lakhs students across the country.

Starting from Pre-Nursery School, it has all type of educational institutes including medical & engineering colleges. Al Ameen in English means trustworthy, and refers to one of the attributes of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on Him).

Dr Mumtaz was born to an advocate father, Yousuf Ismail Khan, and Sadat-un-Nissa Begum, a BA holder; both his parents being graduates from the Aligarh Muslim University. He had one sibling, his sister Naseem Firdous, who has had intellectual disability since birth.

He married Zarin Taj on 27 December 1964 in Bangalore in an arranged marriage set up by their families, who knew one another prior to the marriage.
