We have a strong monitoring system: Baramulla Horti and Agri Dept officials respond

In the backdrop of some farmers and Sopore Fruit Mandi expressing concern over the availability of “sub standard and fake” pesticides and fungicides in markets, officials from the Horticulture and Agriculture Departments in Baramulla district have termed such allegations “grossly sweeping and generalised”.

Officials who spoke to Ziraat Times said that there is a strong system of quality monitoring in place and in case there are any complaints they must be brought to their attention.

In terms of total stock availability of agro chemicals in warehouses in Baramulla district, 381.350 MT/KL are currently available, according to the officials. These figures are of 16 warehouses operating in district Baramulla for 42 products/ product combinations from 01.01.2020 till 19.04.2020.

Pertinently, the total pesticide stock arrival in the district for the same period is 1739.733 MT /KL.

According to law enforcement sources, while there are 622 pesticide dealers & 16 company warehouses operating from district Baramulla, and the Law Enforcement agency is “proactive in monitoring supply, distribution and maintaining quality checks for pesticides.”

According to the Horticulture Department Enforcement wing, samples of 277 batches of pesticides were lifted from markets in district Baramulla till date this year.


Firdous Ganai, Horticulture Department Law Enforcement Officer in Baramulla told Ziraat Times that there are currently around 40 cases going on in different courts of the district against dealers for non-compliance and contraventions of Insecticide Act 1968.

“We have the most stringent enforcement laws and rules currently prevailing in the region. Every pesticide company seeks yearly sales permission for every product from government. Companies stock their products in their designated warehouses and every batch is sampled before it is offered for marketing in Kashmir”, he said.

Officials of Agriculture and Horticulture Department have appealed the growers to bring to their attention any issues of concern to them.
