Property tax introduced in Srinagar cantonment area

Ziraat Times Team Report

SRINAGAR: The Badami Bagh Cantonment Board (BBCB) has started levying property tax in areas under its jurisdiction in the summer capital Srinagar.

Resudents from Shivpora and Batwara confirmed to Ziraat Times that the Cantonment Board has sent them bills for the ongoing year on their residential properties.

Pertinently, several localities in the Srinagar Cantonment areas have both agricultural and orchard lands, for which, as of now, of property tax has been charged.
However, residents have confirmed that they have received bills from the Cantonment board for their residential properties to the tune of Rs 25000 per year.

The bills issued by the BBCB cite the Section 66(a) of the Cantonment Act 2006.

Sources told Ziraat Times that the commercial properties in the area would be charged much higher property tax than residential properties.

This is for the first time that such a tax has been levied of residents of Jammu and Kashmir residing in a Cantonment area.

Earlier in February this year, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir had issued a notification imposing property tax through urban local
bodies (Municipal Corporation, Committees) in their respective areas across Union Territory. However, it has not been implemented so far.
