War on mutton trade? J&K Mutton Association president taken into custody

Ziraat Times News

Srinagar: The Presidnet of All J&K Mutton Dealers’ Association Khazir Muhammad Rigoo has been taken into custody by J&K administration.

Sources in the sector told Ziraat Times that Mr Rigoo has been detained at Sher Garhi Police Station in Srinagar.

Presently, retail and wholesale mutton dealers associations of J&K are locked in a confrontation about the prices of mutton fixed by the government – Rs 480 per kg against the normal Rs 600 per kg.

Independent economic analysts express surprise at this unilateral move, considering that mutton retail price in Delhi is Rs 600 per kg and that the price of transportation of mutton from outside J&K has undergone a steep hike.

Analysts also express worry that such unilateral state-led price fixation could disincentive sheep husbandry in J&K – which is a crucial source of livelihood for lakhs of people across Jammu & Kashmir.

All J&K Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association Secretary General, Mehraj ud Din, has condemned the detention of Mr Rigoo.
