SRINAGAR: In a significant boost to the international academic footprint of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), four of its scholars have bagged competitive research fellowships in Japan.
The selections come at a time when educational and scientific ties between India and Japan are expanding under a mutual framework aimed at hosting 10,000 Indian students and researchers over the next five years.
The Selected Scholars
Tabish Jaan (Ph.D., Plant Biotechnology): Awarded the JST-LOTUS Fellowship for two years. Working under the supervision of Dr. Sajad Majeed Zargar, Head of the Division of Plant Biotechnology.
Misbah Fayaz (M.Sc., Plant Biotechnology): Awarded the JST-LOTUS Fellowship for one year. Also supervised by Dr. Sajad Majeed Zargar.
Sayima Nargis (Ph.D., Plant Pathology): Awarded the JST-LOTUS Fellowship for three years. Guided by Dr. Tariq Rasool.
Nulevino Iralu (M.Sc. Graduate, Plant Pathology): Secured the prestigious four-year Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship. Completed her degree under the supervision of Dr. Aflaq Hameed.
Research Focus & Scope
During their respective tenures across Japanese research institutes, the scholars will engage in advanced research focusing on molecular biology and biotechnology applications. Their work will primarily address:
Mitigating biotic and abiotic stresses in crops.
Enhancing nutritional security and tackling critical agricultural challenges.
The fellowships will provide the researchers with direct access to state-of-the-art Japanese laboratory infrastructure, cutting-edge methodologies, and collaborative developmental projects.
