While lauding the invaluable role of teachers in nation-building, Dr. Abdullah issued a stark appeal to private school owners to immediately address the long-pending salary demands of their staff. “It’s important that the private school teachers are given due respect and salary for the services they provide,” he stated, highlighting what he termed a troubling “anomaly” in compensation compared to their public-sector counterparts.
In his broader address, Dr. Abdullah urged educators to go beyond academics, charging them with the duty of instilling strong character, values, and civility in students to mold them into exemplary citizens. He also drew historical parallels, noting that Kashmir’s former Prime Minister, late Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, began his own career as a teacher and later prioritized education as a cornerstone of public administration.
Dr. Abdullah recalled that when Sheikh Abdullah took office, the region’s literacy rate languished below six percent. Through decades of sustained effort, he said, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were gradually illuminated by the light of knowledge, culminating in the territory’s current outstanding literacy rate of 98.43 percent—a milestone he offered as a tribute to the teaching community, even as he demanded swift justice for those still struggling for fair wages.
