Srinagar, Aug 29: Once regarded as one of Kashmir’s most prized traditional rice varieties, Mushk Budj is today confronting a troubling combination of problems – falling prices, concerns over declining aroma and growing difficulty in accessing what farmers describe as authentic seed.
Farmers in South Kashmir and parts of Budgam say the premium rice, which at one point fetched around ₹25,000 per quintal, is now selling for only ₹6,000–₹8,000 per quintal in some markets. The sharp decline has raised questions not only about the economics of growing Mushk Budji but also about the long-term future of the traditional variety.
Agriculture experts say the issue deserves attention beyond the immediate question of price.
Has Mushk Budji lost some of its traditional aroma?
Mushk Budji’s identity rests largely on its distinctive fragrance, taste and cooking qualities. Traditionally associated with special occasions, particularly weddings and other celebrations, its aroma is arguably its most important distinguishing characteristic.
Farmers and consumers have, however, been raising a more fundamental question: Is the Mushk Budji being cultivated today genetically and qualitatively the same as the traditional variety?
If farmers are experiencing a noticeable decline in aroma, this needs to be scientifically established rather than treated merely as a matter of perception.
Several factors could potentially influence aroma and grain quality – from seed purity and varietal admixture to changing cultivation practices, especially use of pesticides
That makes the question particularly relevant for agricultural research institutions.
Where are the authentic seeds?
Perhaps the more fundamental concern is the availability and traceability of genuine Mushk Budji seed.
If farmers cannot reliably obtain genetically pure, authenticated seed, maintaining the distinctive characteristics of the variety becomes difficult. Over successive seasons, admixture or the use of seed from uncertain sources could potentially affect uniformity and quality.
This raises an obvious question for the Agriculture Production Department and SKUAST-Kashmir:
Is there an adequately maintained, scientifically characterised and easily accessible source of authentic Mushk Budji seed for farmers?
The answer should ideally include information on varietal purification, seed multiplication, certification and distribution.
If such a system already exists, farmers need to know how they can access it. If it does not, strengthening it should arguably become a priority.
A premium rice that is failing to command a premium
The price collapse presents another paradox.
Mushk Budji is increasingly being promoted as a distinctive, premium Kashmiri rice, including through branded packaging and marketing initiatives. Yet farmers at the production end say they are struggling to sell their crop at remunerative prices.
This raises a crucial question:
If Mushk Budji is being marketed as a premium product, why is the farmer not receiving a premium price?
Branding alone cannot resolve a structural marketing problem.
A branded packet may create consumer recognition, but the benefits have to travel back through the value chain to the cultivator. Otherwise, the producer bears the cost and risk of cultivation while most of the value is captured further downstream.
The current situation therefore warrants a closer look at the entire Mushk Budji value chain—from seed to field, procurement to milling, packaging to retail.
Sagam’s special place
Sagam in Kokernag is regarded by farmers and local stakeholders as one of the important natural areas for Mushk Budji cultivation.
The variety’s geographical association itself could potentially become an asset. If scientific studies establish that particular agro-climatic and soil conditions contribute to its characteristic aroma and quality, there could be scope for developing a stronger place-based identity and geographical branding around the rice.
But such branding will only have meaning if the product being sold under the Mushk Budji name consistently possesses the characteristics consumers expect.
What should Agriculture Department and SKUAST examine?
The present concerns offer an opportunity for a structured scientific assessment rather than an isolated response to falling prices.
The Agriculture Production Department and SKUAST-K could jointly examine:
-
Whether the genetic purity of Mushk Budji has changed over time.
-
Availability and accessibility of authenticated planting seed.
-
Whether farmers are receiving genuine varietal seed.
-
Changes in the variety’s aroma and taste compared with historical samples.
