SRINAGAR, AUGUST 08: Two master weavers from Kanihama in Budgam, Manzoor Ahmad Hajam and Fayaz Ahmad Wani, have been conferred the National Handloom Award for their contribution to the traditional art of Kani weaving.

President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the award to the two weavers at a function in New Delhi held to mark National Handloom Day.

The award was given for their joint entry, Chand-Daar Kani Shawl, which was recognised for its intricate craftsmanship and use of the traditional Kani weaving technique.

The National Handloom Award carries a citation and a cash prize of ₹2.5 lakh.

According to the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kashmir, the awarded shawl represents a rare form of Kani weaving guided by coded Talim scripts, which enable weavers to maintain precision throughout the intricate weaving process. The shawl features nearly 20 distinct hues and was created to recreate the appearance and craftsmanship of an antique masterpiece.

The department said the recognition highlighted the skill of the two master weavers and brought renewed attention to Kani weaving, an indigenous craft of Kashmir.

“By winning such prestigious award, the master weavers have brought the Kani weaving technique on the forefront of the crafts sector, which will surely open up new vistas of business opportunities for the high value craft,” a department spokesman said.

The department said the craftsmanship of Hajam and Wani had helped sustain the centuries-old weaving tradition while earning appreciation beyond the region. It described the two awardees as role models for weavers in Kashmir and said the recognition was a matter of pride for the wider handicrafts and handloom community.
