Historic buyer-seller meet on Ladakh Pashmina held in Srinagar

Srinagar, July 31: In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening the Pashmina value chain and enhancing direct market access for growers, the first-ever Buyer-Seller Meet on Ladakh Pashmina was held in Srinagar on Friday, bringing together key stakeholders from the textile and handicrafts sectors.

The event, organized at the DIPR Auditorium, was jointly hosted by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Changthang district, Ladakh, and the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Marketing Society. The initiative was spearheaded by Nitish Rajora, Deputy Commissioner of the newly created Changthang district, with support from PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kashmir and J&K Bank.

The meeting witnessed the participation of representatives from the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tahafuz, the Kashmir Pashmina Welfare Trust, Textile Park Zakura and prominent Pashmina traders from across the Valley.

Addressing the gathering, Thinles Nurboo, General Secretary of the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Marketing Society, outlined the work being undertaken by the cooperative and highlighted the availability of authentic Pashmina that can now be sourced directly from growers, reducing dependence on intermediaries.

Welcoming the participants, Vicky Shaw, Chairman of PHDCCI Kashmir, described the initiative as a landmark development that would be “written in the history of Pashmina backward linkage,” emphasizing its potential to strengthen connections between Changthang producers and Kashmir’s traditional Pashmina industry.

Speakers at the event underscored the importance of preserving the integrity of the Pashmina value chain. Javaid Tenga, President of KCCI, and Mubashir Shaw, Executive Committee Member of PHDCCI and President of the Kashmir Pashmina Welfare Trust, highlighted the need for transparent sourcing mechanisms and stronger linkages between growers and buyers.

Among others present were PHDCCI Executive Committee members Mubashir Ahmad Shaw, Hardeep Singh Dutta, Bilal Ahmad Kawoosa, Qaiser Mir, Urfan Shehri and Showket Mirani.

Sachin Bali (JKAS), Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Leh, delivered a presentation on the role of the cooperative society in ensuring the supply of quality Pashmina directly to stakeholders while maintaining standards and traceability.

In his address as chief guest, Nitish Rajora said the primary objective of the initiative was to bring farmers’ Pashmina produce directly to buyers with minimal involvement of middlemen. He announced that the buyer-seller meet would now become an annual flagship event in Srinagar, with Changthang Pashmina being brought for direct auction among stakeholders.

He also revealed plans to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in Srinagar to streamline operations and improve processing, yield and quality. According to the Deputy Commissioner, the Ladakh administration has introduced incentives and subsidies for Pashmina farmers to support sustainable production.

Rajora said GI-tagged Pashmina marketed under the ‘Changthang’ brand would be sold through the cooperative society at regulated rates backed by stringent quality checks to ensure authenticity.

Concluding the event, the Deputy Commissioner thanked all participating stakeholders and acknowledged the efforts of PHDCCI Kashmir and J&K Bank in mobilizing participants for the inaugural buyer-seller meet at short notice.

The initiative is being viewed as a major step towards creating a more transparent and farmer-centric Pashmina supply chain while safeguarding the authenticity of one of the Himalayan region’s most prized natural fibres.
