Nishat–Sathu walkway will not be closed: MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq

Srinagar, July 31: Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, on Thursday assured residents that the Nishat–Sathu walkway, a connectivity link for the Mir Behri community around Dal Lake, will not be closed.

Addressing local residents, Sadiq said he had taken up the matter with Advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, and had earlier discussed it with the Vice Chairman of the Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA).

“As your representative, I want to assure everyone that the Nishat–Sathu road will not be closed,” Sadiq said, adding that the Omar Abdullah-led government would not allow the “vital lifeline” of Mir Behri residents to be shut down.

He emphasized that the government recognizes the importance of the route for thousands of people living in the Dal Lake area and remains committed to balancing environmental conservation with the rights and livelihoods of local communities.

Environmentalists and local communities, concerned for Dal Lake’s long term well being and sustainability, have been raising deep concerns about the fact that the walkway meant for pedestrians and cycling is now being used for car traffic as well and that concrete expansion of the actual walkway is failing the original purpose of this acting as an environment-friendly link between the two sides of the lake.

Environmentalists are also concerned about these infrastructures inside the lake despite several rehabilitation schemes for the dwellers of the lake outside of the lake area. They argue that the lake’s natural system must be restored to its original state for ots survival and that no further developmental activities must be undertaken in and around the lake that could imperil its ecological balance. 

“The people of Dal are not encroachers; they are the foremost stakeholders in the preservation and protection of Dal Lake. We must trust them, take them into confidence, and work with them, not against them, to secure the future of the lake,” he said.

The MLA stressed that sustainable conservation of Dal Lake can only be achieved through active community participation and by involving residents in decision-making processes concerning the water body and its surrounding areas.

His remarks come amid the reported closure of the Nishat–Sathu walkway, which serves as an important access route for several habitations in the Mir Behri area.
