Government extends GST appeal filing deadline to July 31 amid portal rush

Extension follows representations over technical issues as 30,000 appeals filed in last 15 days

New Delhi, June 30: The Central Government has extended the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) to July 31, 2026, providing taxpayers with an additional month to submit their appeals following reports of technical difficulties caused by a surge in filings on the GSTAT portal.

According to an official notification issued by the government, the revised deadline applies to appeals filed under Section 112(1) read with Section 112(3) of the GST Act.

The extension replaces the earlier deadline of June 30, 2026, which had been notified on September 17, 2025.

The government said the decision was taken after receiving representations from various stakeholders who highlighted technical challenges on the GSTAT portal due to the heavy rush of taxpayers attempting to file appeals close to the deadline.

Official figures indicate that nearly 30,000 appeals were filed during the final 15 days leading up to the original deadline, with daily filings reaching a peak of around 5,500 appeals. The unusually high volume of submissions reportedly placed considerable pressure on the online filing system.

While granting the extension, the government noted that the original deadline had been announced well in advance to provide taxpayers with sufficient time to prepare and submit their appeals.

Authorities have also advised taxpayers not to wait until the last date to file appeals, urging them instead to complete the process well ahead of the revised deadline to avoid last-minute congestion on the portal and minimize the risk of technical issues.

The extension is expected to provide relief to businesses and taxpayers who were unable to complete the filing process due to portal-related challenges while helping ensure smoother functioning of the GST appellate system.
