Jammu, June 12: Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar on Friday inaugurated a two-day Liaison Officers’ Training-cum-Refresher Programme on the Market for Textiles and Clothing (MTC) National Household Survey at the Convention Centre, Jammu.

The programme was organised by the Textiles Committee under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and brought together liaison officers from the northern region to enhance their skills in data collection, quality improvement and emerging aspects of the textile sector, including new fibres, products and sustainability trends.

Among those present on the occasion were Director (Market Research), Textiles Committee, Dr Tapan Kumar Rout; Director Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu, Mohammad Nazir Sheikh; Chairperson (NGO Support), Dr Navneet Kour; liaison officers and entrepreneurs from across the Jammu region.

Addressing the inaugural session, the Divisional Commissioner said Jammu possesses significant potential in the handloom and textile sectors. He emphasised that data collected through the survey would play an important role in policy formulation and contribute to the growth and development of the textile and handloom industry in Jammu and Kashmir.

The survey, titled “Market for Textiles and Clothing”, is being conducted by the Textiles Committee to map textile consumption patterns in households across the country. The exercise covers 13,540 households in 364 centres, including 111 urban and 253 rural locations.

Officials said the survey involves collecting information on household textile consumption through structured questionnaires and personal interviews using scientific data collection methods. Liaison officers selected from survey centres and nearby areas are responsible for gathering and compiling the information.

The officers collect data through two specialised formats — Demographic Particular Returns and Monthly Purchase Returns. The findings are subsequently verified against secondary data and published annually in a report titled “Market for Textiles and Clothing – National Household Survey.”

The training programme is aimed at improving the quality and reliability of data collection and ensuring that survey findings accurately reflect changing consumption trends in the textile and clothing sector.
