Over 8.5 Lakh MSMEs Registered in J&K, 20,000 in Ladakh as Udyam Portal Crosses 7.83 Crore Nationwide

New Delhi, March 30: More than 8.5 lakh enterprises in Jammu and Kashmir and over 20,000 in Ladakh have been registered on the government’s MSME platforms since 2020, reflecting a steady growth of small businesses in the Himalayan region, even as the nationwide total of registered enterprises has crossed 7.83 crore, according to data released by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

As per the official figures, Jammu & Kashmir has recorded 851,815 registered MSMEs, while Ladakh has 20,264 enterprises registered on the Udyam Registration Portal (URP) and the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP).

The data highlights the expanding base of micro, small and medium enterprises across India since the revised classification criteria for MSMEs were introduced in 2020.

Strong Growth in MSME Registrations

The Udyam Registration Portal was launched on July 1, 2020, to streamline the registration of MSMEs, while the Udyam Assist Platform was introduced in January 2023 to bring informal micro enterprises into the formal economy.

Since then, the number of registered enterprises has steadily increased. Official data shows registrations rising from 0.79 crore in 2021–22 to 1.64 crore in 2022–23, 4.12 crore in 2023–24, 6.19 crore in 2024–25, and reaching 7.83 crore by February 28, 2026.

Government Schemes Supporting MSMEs

The Government of India said it continues to support the efforts of states and union territories in developing MSMEs through various schemes and policy initiatives, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas.

Key programmes aimed at improving access to institutional credit include the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises, Self-Reliant India Fund, and PM Vishwakarma.

To enhance competitiveness and promote digital and technological adoption, the ministry is also implementing initiatives under the MSME Champions programme, including certification, innovation, incubation, and green financing schemes.

Budget 2026–27 Announces Credit Reforms

In the Union Budget 2026–27, the government announced several additional measures to improve access to credit for registered MSMEs, including expansion of digital lending and strengthening of financing mechanisms through trade receivables platforms.

These include mandating the use of the Trade Receivables Discounting System for purchases from MSMEs by central public sector enterprises, introducing credit guarantee support for invoice discounting, and integrating the Government e-Marketplace with TReDS to enable faster access to financing.

Awareness Drives to Boost MSME Participation

The ministry said awareness programmes are being conducted by its field offices in coordination with state and union territory governments, industry departments and other stakeholders. These include workshops, social media outreach and publicity campaigns aimed at increasing participation in MSME schemes.
