New Delhi, January 2: In a major relief for highway users across the country, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the discontinuation of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars at the post-issuance stage of FASTag. The move, effective 1 February 2026, is aimed at eliminating delays and inconvenience faced by motorists after FASTag activation.
Under the new policy, KYV will no longer be required for newly issued FASTags for cars, jeeps and vans. The decision addresses long-standing complaints from vehicle owners who were required to undergo additional verification even after completing all documentation at the time of purchase.
Relief for Existing FASTag Users
For vehicles already issued FASTags, KYV will no longer be mandatory as a routine requirement. The process will now be triggered only in specific cases, such as when complaints arise regarding incorrect issuance, misuse, or technical discrepancies like loose or wrongly affixed FASTags.
In the absence of such issues, existing FASTag users will not be required to undergo any additional verification.
Stronger Pre-Activation Checks Introduced
While removing post-activation verification, NHAI has simultaneously strengthened pre-activation validation norms to maintain system integrity and prevent misuse.
Under the revised framework:
-
FASTag activation will be permitted only after mandatory validation of vehicle details through the VAHAN database.
-
Post-activation validation has been completely discontinued.
-
In exceptional cases where vehicle data is unavailable on VAHAN, validation will be conducted using the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) before activation.
-
FASTags sold through online platforms will also be activated only after successful completion of these verification checks.
