New Delhi, Dec 18: India and Oman on Thursday agreed to deepen their strategic and economic partnership with the signing of multiple agreements and the adoption of a joint vision on maritime cooperation during the Prime Minister’s visit, according to an official statement.
A major outcome of the visit was the conclusion of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at strengthening economic integration between the two countries. The agreement seeks to boost bilateral trade by reducing trade barriers, creating a stable and predictable commercial framework, and unlocking opportunities across major sectors of the economy. Officials said the pact is expected to enhance economic growth, generate employment and increase two-way investment flows.
The two sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Heritage and Museums, establishing collaboration to support maritime museums, including India’s National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal. The agreement provides for exchange of artefacts and expertise, joint exhibitions, research initiatives and capacity building, with a view to promoting shared maritime heritage, boosting tourism and strengthening cultural ties.
In the agriculture sector, an MoU was signed to create an umbrella framework for cooperation in agriculture and allied areas, including animal husbandry and fisheries. The agreement focuses on collaboration in agricultural science and technology, horticulture development, integrated farming systems and micro-irrigation.
Another MoU was concluded in the field of higher education, facilitating exchange of faculty, researchers and scholars and promoting joint research, particularly applied research, in areas of mutual interest to support human and socio-economic development.
Both countries also adopted an Executive Programme for cooperation in millet cultivation and agri-food innovation, combining India’s scientific expertise with Oman’s favourable agro-climatic conditions to advance millet research, production and promotion.
In addition, India and Oman adopted a Joint Vision Document on Maritime Cooperation, committing to enhanced collaboration in regional maritime security, the blue economy and the sustainable use of ocean resources.
