Dr. Navneet Kaur from J&K represents India at UN Human Rights Summit

United Nations HQ, New York — Dr. Navneet Kaur, Vice Chairperson of the All India Sustainable Development Council (AISDC), represented India at the 19th International Human Rights Summit held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The three-day summit, themed “Education for Peace,” brought together youth delegates from 38 countries, global dignitaries, and human rights leaders to address critical global challenges through grassroots education and international cooperation.

Speaking at the iconic UN building, Dr. Kaur passionately advocated for women’s and child rights, highlighting India-specific concerns and sharing impactful success stories from across the country. “No effort is too small, and every voice matters,” Dr. Kaur said, adding, “Human rights must become second nature through education—empowering youth and adults alike to build a more just, inclusive, and peaceful world.”

The summit, hosted by United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights International, was co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the United Nations and supported by several other countries including Albania, Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, and Bolivia. Ambassadors from the co-sponsoring nations welcomed participants, with Timor-Leste’s UN Ambassador H.E. Dionísio da Costa Babo Soares officially inaugurating the event.

Dr. Kaur joined prominent figures including Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, founder of United for Human Rights, and Dr. Bertrand Ramcharan, former UN Acting High Commissioner for Human Rights. The summit also featured Ira Helfand, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), who warned of the existential threat posed by nuclear war, underscoring the summit’s urgent relevance.

Panel discussions and workshops tackled pressing issues such as human trafficking, state-sanctioned discrimination, gender-based violence, and youth marginalization. Delegates shared real-life grassroots initiatives built around the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), using educational tools like Youth for Human Rights booklets, PSAs, and educator kits to spark local action.

Dr. Kaur’s address was met with applause as she emphasized the summit’s role as a platform for action, not just dialogue. “When youth, officials, professors, and reformers come together, they build bridges and ignite movements,” she said. “This summit proves that peace begins with education and that education builds the foundation for dignity, equality, and justice.”

The summit concluded with renewed global resolve to use education as a transformative force to defend and expand human rights. Dr. Kaur’s participation marked a significant step in India’s global human rights engagement and reaffirmed AISDC’s role in promoting sustainable, inclusive development.

“Together, we are shaping a more compassionate, just, and united world,” she declared. “Together, we can turn hope into action.”
