Srinagar: As part of its ongoing campaign to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the cold storage industry, JKPICCA (Jammu & Kashmir Fruits & Vegetables Processing and Integrated Cold Chain Association) has announced the launch of its strategic interactions with senior government officials. These efforts are aimed at driving sustainability and accelerating the transition to a greener, more energy-efficient future, a spokesperson said while speaking to Ziraat Times.
In line with this commitment, today marks the first significant step in these efforts as a JKPICCA delegation, headed by President Bashir Ahmad Naik, Vice President Arif Mir, and Secretary General Malik Ishfaq, along with several senior members, held a meeting with Mahmood Ahmad Shah, Managing Director of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL). The discussion focused on identifying key policy measures, regulatory improvements, and government support needed to achieve the ambitious goal of net-zero emissions across the cold storage sector.
As residents of Kashmir, a region known for its fragile environment and one that is already feeling the devastating effects of climate change, JKPICCA recognizes the urgency of this transition. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events, unpredictable temperature shifts, and the degradation of our natural resources highlight the pressing need for sustainable practices. Achieving net-zero emissions in the cold storage industry is not just an environmental goal—it is essential for the survival of our ecosystem and the well-being of future generations, JKPICCA said.
Key Areas of Focus for the Campaign are:
1. Energy Efficiency: Introducing advanced technologies to lower energy consumption in cold storage facilities.
2. Renewable Energy Integration: Promoting the adoption of solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources to power cold storage units.
3. Waste Reduction: Reducing waste and improving the efficiency of refrigeration systems to minimize carbon footprints.
4. Government Collaboration: Addressing bottlenecks and identifying policy solutions to create an enabling environment for the transition to net-zero.
JKPICCA believes that achieving this goal will require concerted efforts from both the private and public sectors. The ongoing discussions with KPDCL are the first of many that will ensure we have the support and infrastructure in place to meet our sustainability targets. However, it is vital that we continue collaborating with the government to overcome challenges such as access to green technology, policy alignment, and financial support.
As part of this initiative, JKPICCA calls on stakeholders across the cold storage industry, government entities, and the broader community to join them in realizing a net-zero future.
