People of Poonch, Rajouri, Uri, Kupwara, Karnah, Gurez need immediate support

Targeting civlians in any war is both unacceptable and condemmable. For the people of J&K’s border areas from Kathua to Kargil, especially in flashpoint areas of Poonch, Rajouri, Uri, Kupwara, Karnah, Gurez, the recent cross border hostilities have been yet another traumatic experience. Several precious lives have been lost in Poonch, Uri and other border towns. Many homes lie in ruins, families diaplaced,  fields are scarred by craters, livestock lost. Children shiver in makeshift shelters and parents endure sleepless nights, fearing for their loved ones.

Beyond the physical damage, the emotional toll is profound. Many farmers, horticulturists and small traders have seen their livelihoods evaporate overnight. Although the ceasefire announced on Saturday has brought much needed relief and happiness to the displaced people, it is going to take a while until the affected people are able to resume  their normal lives.

In this situation, the Jammu & Kashmir government must take measures to dispatch food rations, clean water, winterized tents, medical camps and provide trauma counseling to every affected village. Mobile relief teams must reach remote areas like Karnah and Gurez without delay.

While J&K government has laudably announced monetary relief for the next of kin for those who have lost their lives in cross border shelling, it should also consider launching a compensation scheme, in support from the central government, for damaged homes, agricultural losses  and livestock. The government should also introduce interest-free loans and vocational training so displaced farmers and small-business owners, directly impacted by the hostilities, can rebuild their income.

For ensuring long-term rehabilitation, the government should also invest in stronger, weather-resistant housing and fortified community shelters in most vulnerable border areas of J&K. There is a scope for improving early-warning systems to protect residents from future flare-ups.

Government should also partner with NGOs, local charities and businesses to supplement government efforts. Support community-driven initiatives—such as cooperative orchards and clean-energy heating solutions—to foster economic recovery and social cohesion.

These measures will not only meet urgent needs but also restore hope. The people of Jammu & Kashmir’s border districts deserve more than sympathy, they deserve swift, tangible action. Let us stand united to deliver relief, fair compensation and a sustainable path to rehabilitation. Only then can we honor their resilience and help them reclaim a life of dignity, security and renewed opportunities.
