Sonamarg to Be Promoted as 12-Month Tourist Destination, Says Govt

Srinagar, Nov 3: The Jammu and Kashmir government is committed to promoting Sonamarg as an all-weather tourist destination, with all requisite facilities and recreational activities.

This was stated by Director Tourism Kashmir, Raja Yakoob, at a meeting of officers and stakeholders in Sonamarg on November 3.

The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Shyambir, to review winter preparedness and allied facilities for keeping Sonamarg open during the winter.

The District Administration met with the Hotelier Association Sonamarg and other stakeholders to address their concerns and ensure that all facilities and arrangements are put in place for keeping Sonamarg open during the winter.

Mr Yakoob said that the government will ensure that all facilities are available to tourists in Sonamarg during the winter, including heating arrangements in hotels, water and electricity, and maintenance of roads.

He also said that the government will promote Sonamarg as an all-weather tourist destination at trade fairs and other appropriate platforms, including social media.

Meanwhile, Beacon was directed to keep sufficient men and machinery stationed in Sonamarg to clear snow from the main road timely. A joint control room will also be established at the CEO office of the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) for better coordination of snow clearance operations.

The new water scheme in Sonamarg will be commissioned soon, ensuring sufficient water supply to all establishments during the winter.

The Executive Engineer, PDD division Ganderbal, was directed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to Sonamarg, with a proper curtailment schedule notified in advance.

The Z-Morh Tunnel will be operationalized for emergency traffic movement from December 10, it was stated during the meeting.

The SDM Kangan was also asked to identify parking areas in consultation with the SDA for the winter and carry out necessary repairs.

Chains will be made mandatory for all types of vehicles from Gagangeer onwards after December 15.

The up-gradation plan for the PHC Sonamarg has been approved, and all necessary facilities will be available at the PHC once upgraded. All stakeholders were directed to submit their activity plans for the winter festival at Sonamarg by the 2nd week of November.
