Kashmir Retailers appeal LG Sinha; urge resolution of SMC taxes issue

Srinagar, Aug 9: Expressing concern for the recent sealing of shops by Srinagar Municipal Corporation in Srinagar city centre areas, the Kashmir Retailers Association, President, Farhan Kitab in a statement to Ziraat Times has said that ‘a lack of awareness by SMC and ill timing of the action has created chaos in the city markets.’
He said the shopkeepers of city centre are neither aware about the newly-introduced taxes nor about the hike, adding that it was the responsibility of the municipal authorities to make the stakeholders aware.
“Moreover, the SMC should have taken the shopkeepers onboard before taking any such decision,” he added.
In an appeal to the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, Mr Kitab, in his capacity also as a core member of the All India Retailers Association, has said that the retail sector in J&K was facing a market slump due to the Covid19 pandemic, and apprehensions about a third wave have dented consumer confidence to a great extent.
“In these circumstances, the government should have granted some amnesty/wavier to the shopkeepers who have been suffering since 2019 for one reason or the other”, Mr Kitab said in the statement.

Mr Kitab has appealed LG Manoj Sinha to personally look into the matter in the interest of people’s livelihoods and overall economic health of J&K.
