Two limestone blocks in Anantnag auctioned through Centre’s mineral auction process

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 3: Two mineral blocks in Jammu & Kashmir have been auctioned through the Ministry of Mines under the Central Government’s mineral auction process, marking the first such auction in the Union Territory.

The auction of the two limestone blocks in Anantnag is expected to pave the way for systematic exploration and development of J&K’s mineral resources, besides creating opportunities for investment, employment and allied economic activity, an official statement said.

The Government of Jammu & Kashmir had entrusted the auction of the mineral blocks to the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, the statement added, saying the auction was conducted through the Centre’s competitive and transparent mineral auction process.

Two limestone blocks auctioned

The Koot–Kapran Limestone Block, located in Koot and Kapran villages of Dooru tehsil in Anantnag district, covers 22.43 hectares and has estimated limestone resources of 4.75 million tonnes.

The block has been explored up to the G-4 stage, with further detailed exploration and development envisaged.

The Wantrag Limestone Block, also in Anantnag district, covers 5.36 hectares and has estimated limestone resources of 10.853 million tonnes. It has been explored up to the G-3 stage, including 159 metres of drilling.

Together, the two blocks have estimated limestone resources of about 15.6 million tonnes.

Investment and employment opportunities

The Ministry of Mines said the auction is expected to catalyse investment and economic activity in J&K’s mineral sector.

The development of mining and associated activities is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities and generate business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, service providers and allied industries.

The Centre said organised development of the mineral sector would also contribute to greater value creation from J&K’s mineral resources and provide opportunities for local participation in the emerging mining ecosystem.

The Ministry of Mines will continue to coordinate with the Government of Jammu & Kashmir for transparent, sustainable and responsible development of the Union Territory’s mineral resources.

The development has been described by the Centre as another step towards strengthening the economic foundations of a “Viksit Jammu & Kashmir”.
